Stephen Merrylees

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Stephen has been the Managing Director of SMR Legal since its inception in 2011. He holds Bachelor degrees in Arts and Laws from the Australian National University, and is also a nationally accredited mediator.

Stephen has extensive prior experience as a senior political adviser and government lawyer, including roles with the Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. His experience also includes operating a large family farming property for over 15 years, lecturing in law at Melbourne University (Dookie Campus) and in the position of Executive Director of the Fairley Leadership Program.

This skillful mix of high level practical experience and academic qualifications sets Stephen apart as someone who can provide a unique perspective to clients. He is renowned for finding practical solutions to clients’ complicated and seemingly gridlocked matters, especially when it comes to commercial and estate matters. Having also been a five-term Mayor and nationally accredited mediator, Stephen is highly sought after for his advice on governance issues impacting private and public sector organisations.

Stephen has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course and has served on numerous local, regional and state advisory boards and committees, with a keen interest in the not for profit sector. Stephen is a Life Member of both the CFA and Shepparton Retirement Villages. Deeply committed to the region, Stephen is currently First Lieutenant of the CFA Shepparton District Headquarters Brigade and Chair of the Goulburn Valley Health Foundation Board, the Shepparton Art Museum Board and the Shepparton Retirement Villages Consumer Advisory Body.
