Alexander Sheed-Finck
Lawyer in Melbourne and Shepparton
DIRECTOR – COMMERCIAL LITIGATION
Alexander leads the Commercial Litigation department of SMR Legal.
Alexander is an Accredited Specialist in Commercial Litigation, a qualification granted by the Law Institute of Victoria to practitioners who have demonstrated substantial experience and successfully completed specialist accreditation requirements in their field. He also serves on the Commercial Litigation Advisory Committee of the Law Institute of Victoria, which advises on ongoing standards for specialist accreditation in commercial litigation.
Alexander practises primarily from SMR Legal’s Melbourne office. He acts in significant disputes where businesses, property interests and commercial reputations are at risk. Alexander appears in the Supreme Court of Victoria, County Court and the Federal Court of Australia.
His practice is focused on disputes between business owners, directors, shareholders and trustees, particularly where company, trust and property structures are complex. These matters often arise when commercial relationships break down and require clear strategic judgment, close attention to legal and commercial structure, and a willingness to pursue matters through mediation, urgent applications and trial where necessary.
Alexander is regularly engaged in substantial commercial disputes involving control, entitlement, solvency, property security, and the preservation or division of valuable assets. His clients include business owners, investors, trustees and creditors dealing with serious commercial controversies where the facts are often complex and the stakes are high.
A significant part of Alexander’s practice concerns caveats, caveat removal and disputes over proprietary interests in land. He advises and appears in urgent matters involving the lodgement, defence, withdrawal and removal of caveats, including where the underlying dispute concerns loans, guarantees, equitable charges, trusts, joint ventures and contested dealings with real property.
He also advises in insolvency-related matters, including disputes arising from administrations, liquidations, personal guarantees, security enforcement, clawback risk and restructuring options under the Bankruptcy Act 1966 (Cth). This work is closely connected to his broader disputes practice and often arises where financial distress intersects with contested ownership, director conduct or asset recovery.
Alexander often receives positive feedback from clients demonstrating his skills and professionalism:
“From the first call, Alex understood our inquiry clearly. He is a kind but clear communicator and very quickly added his extensive experience, which gave great confidence. I highly recommend Alex as a trustworthy and sincere professional with outstanding expertise.”
“Absolutely fantastic advice. Upmost professionalism and just plain excellent at what they do. Thank you Alexander Sheed-Finck, for all of your help.”
