Bridget Coutts
Lawyer
Bridget was trained and admitted as a lawyer whilst working at SMR Legal. She has since returned to SMR Legal to continue her career as an experienced family lawyer. Prior to her return, Bridget gained diverse experience working in a community legal centre and specialist family law firms in Melbourne. This experience has enabled Bridget to hone her family law skillset further following the supervised legal traineeship she completed under the guidance of Fiona Merrylees at SMR Legal.
Bridget has experience in parenting, property, spousal maintenance, child support, child protection and family violence intervention order related matters. Bridget is also a confident court advocate regularly appearing in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. Bridget has appeared as a duty lawyer in the family violence intervention order list at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court.
Bridget graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Global Studies. In her final year of study, Bridget successfully completed an honours thesis which considered how intervention orders are used in family law parenting matters.
Bridget is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and Law Council of Australia Family Law Section. She has previously sat as a committee member for the Goulburn Valley Young Professionals and Law Institute of Victoria Young Family Lawyers Working Group. Bridget continues to be actively involved with Victorian Women Lawyers as a previous co-chair and executive board member.
